Our Approach

Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) integrates sustainability into its planning design, development and operations. A dedicated Environment and Sustainability team, supported by cross-functional teams, oversees the implementation of the ESG strategy. The strategy focuses on environmental responsibility, social impact, and long-term value through a strong governance framework, reinforcing NMIAs commitment to sustainability.

Sustainability Stories

Climate Change

NMIA integrates climate action into its sustainability efforts. Its carbon reduction targets align with India’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 and the Paris Agreement's aim to limit global warming to below 2°C, while striving towards the1.5°C target.

Water Stewardship

At NMIA, water stewardship is a key component of our airport's sustainability strategy. We are committed to using water responsibly across all operational areas, including terminals, landscaping, and airside functions. Our ambition will be to achieve Water Positivity by identifying water-related risks, optimizing usage, and reducing reliance on surface water. To support this, NMIA will operates Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) with cumulative capacity of 5500 KLD, enabling efficient recycling and reuse. Continuous monitoring of water consumption, discharge quality, and recycling performance ensures data-driven decisions that will enhance both operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Waste Management

NMIA aligns its waste management approach with AAHL’s Waste Management Policy and its ambition of achieving Zero Waste to Landfill Operation. The strategy will be built around the 5R principles—Reduce, Reuse, Reprocess, Recycle, and Recover—ensuring a comprehensive and sustainable waste management system. Waste will process through five distinct stages at a dedicated Material Recovery Facility (MRF), ensuring full compliance with statutory environmental regulations. As part of our commitment to circular economy practices, NMIA is setting-up10,000Kg/Day capacity Biogas Plant to process the Organic waste. The organic waste will convert into manure and green energy, contribute to both environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.

Fleet Decarbonization

NMIA is committed to transforming airport mobility by accelerating the transition to eco-friendly transportation solutions. As part of its fleet decarbonization strategy, NMIA will continue to decarbonize its fleet by procuring Electric Vehicles (EVs) and actively influencing our key airline partners and Ground Service Providers to adopt EVs in their operations. To support this transition, the airport has installed EV charging facilities at the landside and airside parking zone.

Land Use and Biodiversity

Land use and Biodiversity preservation are part of NMIAs environmental strategy. Under the Adani group's pledge on WEF’s 1t.org platform. NMIA planted over 1000 plants in FY25. Our Biodiversity Management strategy is aligned to AAHLs Biodiversity Policy, committed to ‘No Net Loss to Biodiversity’.

Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF)

Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) team at NMIA will play a critical role in ensuring passenger and aircraft safety during emergencies. They are equipped with cutting-edge firefighting vehicles and rescue tools, they respond swiftly to emergencies, conduct regular drills, and coordinate with national agencies to protect lives and aircraft.

Community Engagement

NMIA is committed to building strong and meaningful relationships with the communities surrounding the airport. During its development phase, the airport engages with local stakeholders through regular consultations, awareness programs, and inclusive planning initiatives. NMIA prioritises community well-being by promoting sustainable livelihood, supporting skill development, and ensuring minimal disruption through responsible construction practices.
