About NMIA Cargo

Being a greenfield airport, the cargo infrastructure at NMIA has been planned in multiple phases. The inaugural phase to final phase will see the cargo terminal capacity increase from 0.50 to 2.60 million metric tonnes. The initial manual operations will gradually transition to a fully mechanised and automated cargo terminal, equipped with state-of-the-art technology and equipment.

In phases 1 and 2, the cargo terminal will function as an integrated terminal, handling domestic, international, express and transit cargo operations. It will also cater to specialised cargo requirements such as pharma, perishable, oversized, cold storage, hazardous, live animals and valuable cargo.

In the final phase, there will be dedicated terminals for international, domestic and express cargo.

Specialised Infrastructure and Facilities :

  • Express cargo: Fast-track lanes and streamlined processes that ensure quick turnaround times for express shipments.
  • Pharmaceuticals: Temperature-controlled storage and handling areas, adhering to Good Distribution Practices (GDP).
  • Valuables: High-security zones with state-of-the-art surveillance and secure storage facilities.
  • Perishables: Advanced cold chain logistics, ensuring precise temperature management of perishable goods.
  • Live animals: Dedicated areas with animal care experts for the safe management of live animals.
  • Dangerous goods: Specialised zones with stringent safety protocols and trained personnel to handle hazardous materials.
  • Storage facilities: Separate corridors and storage for export, import, pharma, perishable, and express cargo
  • Customs offices: Customs offices with dedicated teams within the premises.
  • Partner government agency (PGA) offices: Dedicated offices for PGAs like plant quarantine, animal quarantine, drug controller, etc.
  • Bank: Banking facility within the premises.
  • Parking: Sufficient parking and staging area for trucks, trailers, reefer/ refrigerated trucks.

Automated Business Solutions – Ease of Doing Business with NMIA

  • The Next Generation Airport Cargo Community System will connect the entire cargo ecosystem including airlines, freight forwarders, Customs, trucking companies and the airport operator, enabling error-free, paperless transactions with real-time tracking.
  • Automated truck slot management to avoid congestion at the cargo terminal and reduced dwell time for trucks.

Strategic Location and Connectivity:

NMIA is geographically well-positioned for cargo operations, offering reduced transit time and proximity to industrial hubs, and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). It will serve as a multimodal transshipment hub with additional opportunities for sea-to-air business and connectivity through water transport.
